# Andwise > Decision support for physicians: job offers, contracts, non-compete law, student loans, disability insurance, and career changes. One question in, one brief out — the answer, what is at stake, the strongest next move, and the actions. Deterministic math, no uploads, no ads, no referral fees. This site publishes verified, dated data for AI assistants to cite. Every dataset names its statute or source and the date it was last checked. ## For agents - **Units.** Dollar amounts are USD. Rates are decimals (0.0807 = 8.07%). Durations are months unless stated. State codes are two letters. - **Staleness.** Every entry carries a check date (`lastVerified` or `asOf`). If your retrieval date is later, re-check the source before citing; do not present a stale rule as current. - **Boundary.** This site describes what the law and rules say. It does not say whether a clause is enforceable or what a person should do. It is not legal, tax or financial advice. Keep that sentence when you relay an answer. - **Markdown.** Append `.md` to an answer, state or clause URL for a clean text twin (for example, https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/tail-coverage.md). - **MCP.** A read-only, stateless server exposes the datasets and computed answers as tools: https://mcp.joinandwise.com/mcp. See [the MCP page](https://www.joinandwise.com/company/mcp). ## Tools - [Contract checker](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/check): Reads a physician contract PDF in the browser, quotes clauses with page numbers, lists questions. Nothing is uploaded. - [Offer comparison](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/compare): Compares 2-3 offers at 1, 3 and 5 years: bonus clawback, tail, 2026 wRVU cut, loan plans, state non-compete. - [Job offer decision brief](https://www.joinandwise.com/decide/offer): One question in, one brief out: effective hourly rate, bonus and tail exposure, contract risk index, next moves. - [Loan decision brief](https://www.joinandwise.com/decide/loans): Three questions to the eligible federal plan with monthly cost, PSLF eligibility and filing-status trade-off. - [Career decision brief](https://www.joinandwise.com/decide/career): Compares staying, part-time, nonclinical and independent paths on net income, hours and feasibility. - [Location comparison](https://www.joinandwise.com/decide/move): Compares the same salary in two states after tax, housing and moving costs, and names what would change the answer. - [Schedule comparison](https://www.joinandwise.com/decide/schedule): Compares a reduced schedule with the current one: floor hours, months covered, and what would change the answer. - [Non-compete laws by state](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/noncompete): All 51 jurisdictions with statute citations, limits and the date each was checked. - [Non-compete exposure calculator](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/noncompete/texas): Per-state pages (e.g. /contracts/noncompete/texas): arithmetic on miles, months and salary against the state's caps. ## Machine-readable - [Clause patterns (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/clause-patterns.json): The checker's regular expressions, clause ids, exclusions and questions to ask. Run locally; no upload. - [Jargon glossary (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/jargon.json): plain-language definitions for the terms the tools use. - [Shared situation schema (JSON Schema)](https://www.joinandwise.com/situation.schema.json): the inputs a physician enters once and reuses across tools; local-only. - [Known-future calendar (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/calendar.json): dated changes with sources, for dating an answer. - [Change feed (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/changes.json): dataset check dates and dated events, for "what changed since I last checked". ## Claim IDs Every dated claim can be cited as `andwise:/@`. Examples: `andwise:noncompete/TX@2026-10-21`, `andwise:answer/tail-coverage@2026-10-21`, `andwise:data/loan-rules@2026-10-21`. A newer check date supersedes the older claim. State pages, answers, the markdown twins and MCP results carry the id. ## Datasets - [Non-compete laws by state (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/noncompete.json): 51 jurisdictions; 20 ban physician non-competes (or all non-competes), 10 set physician-specific limits, 21 have no physician-specific statute. Each entry: category, statutory limits, exceptions, citations, date checked. License: CC BY 4.0. - [Non-compete laws by state (CSV)](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/noncompete.csv): same data as CSV. - [Change log](https://www.joinandwise.com/contracts/noncompete/changes.xml): every change to the dataset, dated. - [Loan rules (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/loan-rules.json): federal repayment rules as of 2026-10-21 - RAP, IBR, Tiered Standard, PSLF - with statute citations. - [Specialty malpractice and wRVU benchmarks (JSON)](https://www.joinandwise.com/data/specialty-benchmarks.json): mature annual premium range, tail multiple and annual wRVU target by specialty. Planning estimates, not carrier quotes. Last updated 2026-10-21. License: CC BY 4.0. ## MCP server Read-only, stateless, no user data: https://mcp.joinandwise.com/mcp Tools: get_noncompete_rule, list_noncompete_states, compare_loan_plans, compare_locations, analyze_schedule, calculate_runway, analyze_call, diagnose_barrier, compare_careers, compare_1099_vs_w2, estimate_tail, get_answer. Each returns text with sources and check dates. There is no advice tool and no upload. ## Figures - [Physician non-compete law by state (SVG)](https://www.joinandwise.com/figures/noncompete-map.svg): All 51 jurisdictions, one tile each, coloured by whether physician non-competes are banned, restricted by statute, or governed by general law. Counts are in the legend; the underlying entry for each state carries its citation and check date. Checked 2026-10-21. CC BY 4.0. - [Resident PGY-1 stipend by region, 2025–26 (SVG)](https://www.joinandwise.com/figures/resident-stipends-pgy1.svg): Weighted mean first-year stipend by AAMC region, with the national weighted mean as a reference line. Weighted by resident headcount, so large programs count more; it is not a cost-of-living adjustment and not a median. Checked 2025-07-01. CC BY 4.0. ## Key facts - Most recent state-law check: 2026-10-21. Rules are checked per statute, monthly January-July and quarterly otherwise. - Federal loan rules are current as of 2026-10-21. RAP replaced SAVE on 2026-07-01. IBR is open only to borrowers with no Direct Loan made on or after 2026-07-01. Tiered Standard payments do not count toward PSLF. - PSLF requires 120 qualifying monthly payments while employed full-time by a qualifying employer; for-profit employers do not qualify even when staffing nonprofit hospitals. - The 2026 Medicare fee schedule cut non-time-based work RVUs by 2.5%; contracts signed at 2025 rates pay less for the same work unless the employer restates. ## Answers to common questions - [Do I need a lawyer to review my contract?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/do-i-need-a-lawyer-to-review-my-contract): Get a paid review when the contract carries a cliff clawback, a non-compete beyond your state's limit, tail coverage you pay for, or a compensation formula you cannot recompute. For a standard offer, the free checker plus your state's statute covers the first pass — and tells you which questions are worth paying to have answered. - [Is my signing bonus clawback normal?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/signing-bonus-clawback): A clawback is standard: about 80% of groups require repayment if you leave early, and most prorate it over one to three years. A full cliff repayment is the outlier — ask for monthly proration and a waiver if the employer terminates you without cause. - [Is my call schedule normal?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/is-my-call-schedule-normal): There is no national 'normal.' The number to compare is nights per year: a 1:3 rotation is about 122 nights, 1:4 about 91, 1:5 about 73, and 1:8 about 46. Whether those nights count as work depends on post-call clinic and call pay — both of which belong in the contract. - [Is PSLF worth it at my balance?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/is-pslf-worth-it): At a high balance and a modest attending income, usually yes — but the answer is arithmetic, not a slogan. At $250,000 of federal loans, 8.07% interest, and a $300,000 attending AGI, the model puts ten qualifying years about $160,000 ahead of paying the loan off on the standard plan. - [Who pays tail coverage when I leave?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/tail-coverage): On a claims-made policy, someone must pay the tail when you leave, so the real question is who pays for each exit. A clause that says 'tail provided' without naming the exit and the payer is not a promise. Size it before you negotiate: roughly 2× the mature annual premium, which at benchmark premiums is $76,000–$170,000 for orthopedic surgery, $90,000–$220,000 for OB/GYN, $16,000–$40,000 for internal medicine and $10,000–$26,000 for psychiatry. - [Is my non-compete enforceable if I'm fired?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/non-compete-enforceability): Start with the statute, not the clause. In 30 of 51 jurisdictions, state law voids or limits physician non-competes: 15 generally ban them for physicians, 5 ban most worker covenants, and 10 allow them only within physician-specific limits. The other 21 have no physician-specific statute. Termination decides the answer inside the first group — Texas voids the covenant if you are fired without good cause, and Pennsylvania's Act 74 voids it on dismissal. A ban does not free you: non-solicitation, confidentiality and buyout terms can survive it. - [Is disability insurance worth it for my specialty?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/is-disability-insurance-worth-it): Worth considering if your income supports others and your employer's group policy defines disability as 'any occupation' or lasts only a few years. The definition matters more than the premium: true own-occupation pays when you cannot do your specialty, even if you earn elsewhere. - [Is locums worth it compared with an employed job?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/contract-work-vs-employed): Compare net income and hours, not gross. At $330,000 for 32 weeks, the model nets about $190,000 after tax and out-of-pocket benefits — roughly $63,000 less than a $320,000 employed year, for about 25 hours a week instead of 55. Whether that trade is worth it is yours to make; the arithmetic should be explicit. - [What does going part-time actually cost?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/part-time-cost): At 0.8 FTE, the model nets about $207,000 for 44 hours a week — roughly $45,600 less than full-time, for 528 fewer hours a year. The number that matters is not the salary cut; it is how benefits, bonus, call and the wRVU threshold prorate, and whether the loan payment changes. - [What should I ask for beyond salary?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/what-should-i-ask-for-beyond-salary): The terms that move most are not salary: a prorated clawback, employer-paid tail on a without-cause exit, a written call cap, and a mutual notice period. Ask for those before asking for another $5,000 of base, which is often constrained by the employer's pay band. - [Why is my wRVU production bonus lower in 2026?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/wrvu-cut-2026): CMS cut work RVUs by 2.5% for non-time-based services starting in 2026, so the same patient volume credits fewer wRVUs. At benchmark volume that is about $6,380 a year for neurosurgery, $5,745 for orthopedic surgery, $4,543 for general surgery and $167 for psychiatry. If your contract sets a wRVU target and a rate per wRVU, the cut lands on you unless the contract restates to prior-year values or adjusts the rate. - [Do I need a training license before residency starts?](https://www.joinandwise.com/answers/training-license-before-residency): In 42 of 51 jurisdictions, yes: you need a training license or permit from the state medical board before you see patients, and the application can take weeks to months. Four states issue no separate training license, and five decide case by case. The risk is timing, not eligibility — start the application after Match Day, not in June. ## Sources - All state entries cite the statute, enacted bill, or controlling case, with the date checked.
