Wyoming physician non-compete law
As of October 21, 2026, Wyoming law voids most non-compete agreements, including physicians', with exceptions.
Banned for most workersChecked 2026-10-21
Since July 1, 2025, Wyoming voids most noncompetes for all workers. A separate provision voids covenants in physician employment, partnership or corporate agreements restricting practice of medicine after termination; other contract terms remain enforceable. Applies to contracts entered on or after July 1, 2025. (Wyo. Stat. § 1-23-108 (Title 1 compilation, May 2026))
Changed recently. The current rule took effect 2025-07-01. Pages and guides written before then may describe the old rule.
Limits in the law
- After termination, a physician may tell patients with a rare disorder (per NORD criteria) whom they were treating about their continuing practice and new contact information; neither the physician nor the new employer is liable for damages for that disclosure or later treatment
- Under the general rule, expense-recovery clauses (relocation, education, training) are capped at 100% if under 2 years of service, 66% for 2 to under 3 years, and 33% for 3 to under 4 years
Who it covers
All workers (skilled or unskilled labor) under subsection (a). Subsection (b) addresses physicians practicing medicine as defined in W.S. 33-26-102(a)(xi), in employment, partnership or corporate agreements 'between physicians'. No other clinicians are named specifically.
Exceptions
- Covenant in a contract for the purchase and sale of a business or its assets
- Covenant to the extent it protects trade secrets (W.S. 6-3-501(a)(xi))
- Contract provisions recovering relocation, education and training expenses on the declining schedule above
- Executive and management personnel, officers, and employees who are professional staff to executive and management personnel
Effective date
The current rule took effect 2025-07-01.
Notes
Applies to contracts entered on or after July 1, 2025; earlier contracts remain under common law. The physician subsection speaks of agreements 'between physicians' and does not say whether it reaches hospital employers, but the general void rule also covers physicians unless an exception applies.

Questions to ask about your contract
- Is the radius measured from your practice site or from every location the employer owns?
- Does the restriction apply if the employer terminates you without cause?
- Is there a buyout, and how is the amount calculated?
- What does your state's law say about physician non-competes?
